Gastroenteritis Treatment for Pets

at Walk In Clinic for Animals
Gastroenteritis, often referred to as “gastro” is a common ailment affecting pets. It can manifest with various symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. At our veterinary clinic, we are equipped to investigate the underlying cause of your pet’s gastrointestinal distress and provide appropriate treatment.

Our veterinarians will conduct a thorough examination to assess your pet’s overall health and identify any potential triggers for their symptoms. We will take a comprehensive history to evaluate if the gastroenteritis symptoms are due to dietary indiscretion, a virus or bacteria, parasites, foreign body or underlying illness. Our vets will also do a physical examination and may recommend blood tests, faecal analysis, or other diagnostic tests to help determine the origin of your pet’s symptoms. By understanding the root cause, we can tailor a treatment plan to address your pet’s specific needs.

In most cases, gastroenteritis can be managed with conservative therapy and supportive care. We may recommend a bland diet, such as boiled chicken and rice, to rest the digestive system. Adequate hydration is crucial, so we may advise on oral rehydration fluids or recommend intravenous fluids if your pet is severely dehydrated. Sometimes medications are required to help your pet deal with gastroenteritis. This can include medications to control vomiting and diarrhoea, antibiotics to treat bacterial infections, or specific therapies to address underlying conditions.

By seeking timely veterinary care, you can help your pet recover from gastroenteritis quickly and prevent complications. Our clinic is committed to providing compassionate and effective care to ensure your pet’s well-being.
