at Walk In Clinic for Animals
If your pet is shaking their head, scratching their ears, or has a smelly discharge, it could be a sign of an ear infection. Other symptoms include redness, swelling, tilting their head, or even loss of balance.
Several factors can contribute to ear infections. Allergies, swimming or bathing, or narrowed ear canals can increase risk of an infection, while ear mites can directly cause irritation. Excessive hair growth in the ear canal can trap moisture, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. Additionally, certain breeds with floppy ears are more prone to infections due to poor air circulation.
If you suspect your pet has an ear infection, it’s crucial to seek veterinary care. Your vet can diagnose the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment. This may involve cleaning the ears, prescribing medication, or removing excessive hair from the ear canal. Ear infections are particularly common during warmer periods, such as spring and summer, so keep a close eye on your pet’s ears during these times.
By taking proactive measures and seeking timely veterinary care, you can help keep your pet’s ears healthy and free from discomfort.
